What
MCP servers are outside programs that give Claude Code extra tools. When one returns an image, binary data or a very large result, Claude Code handles it specially. Those paths now report the outcome for each result as one of:
shownsavedkept_in_conversationcut_not_savedsave_failedsaved_as_text
The general step that saves tool results to disk also reports cut_not_saved and saved_as_text. Images are now read back from the picture reader only when it asks for the picture to be shrunk. What the model sees is unchanged. The tengu_mcp_singleton_unwrap switch is unchanged and falls back to on when the server sends nothing.
Why
A host, meaning the app that embeds Claude Code, can now tell whether a large MCP result was cut short or saved to a file, and show that to you instead of leaving it hidden.
tengu_mcp_singleton_unwrap On for this account, and not off by defaultThe flag server returned on for the one account this site reads, and nothing in this release compiles it off by default. The compiled default is shown below, and says which it is when we cannot read one: a fifth of gates compile in a string or a number rather than on or off, and most published releases have no gate table behind them at all. No client can see what the server returns for your account.
This account: on · anonymous baseline: on · compiled default in v2.1.317: on
These values were read against a different version of Claude Code, so treat them as the nearest reading available instead of one taken on this release.
Read once, for one account on one subscription tier, against v2.1.317. It isn't a statement about your account. What a flag value here can and cannot tell you
