Unclear What decides whether directory listing is switched on or off is not stated.

What

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how Claude Code connects to outside tools and data sources, called servers. The tool that reads a directory listing from an MCP server now has its own permission check:

  • It can refuse, with the reason "directory listing off"
  • It can ask you first, with a prompt saying it requires permission
  • An always-allow rule does not cover it
  • A new check can refuse a listing before the server is contacted

The earlier error saying directory listing is not enabled in this build has been replaced by a shared message.

Why

Listing an MCP server's directories may now stop and ask you instead of running without a prompt.
