Unclear What the new tell mode does differently for file and image downloads is not known.
What
The setting that Anthropic's server can use to switch an experiment in Claude Code's file and image download step used to resolve to one of three modes: "on", "count" or "off". It now also accepts "tell". Depending on a condition inside that step, a "tell" from the server ends up either as "tell" or as "on".
When the server sends nothing, the setting still falls back to "off", so the new mode only applies if the server sends it. The condition Claude Code checks before it reads the setting at all has also changed.
Why
This looks like a new variant of an existing experiment being rolled out in stages, with the server deciding who gets it.
