What

Compaction is how Claude Code frees up room in a long conversation by summarizing older parts of it. The step that prepares the content to be summarized has changed. It now trims that content in stages:

  • First it leaves out some messages.
  • Then it cuts text from the beginning.
  • On its final pass it removes images and other attached media.

It stops after a fixed number of passes.

Why

This could let compaction recover when the content to summarize is too long to send, instead of failing outright.
