What

CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is the environment variable that tells Claude Code where to keep its configuration. When Claude Code starts, it sends a usage report, known as telemetry. That report now includes what kind of path the variable holds. The kinds include:

  • unset
  • blank
  • absolute
  • unc (a Windows network path)
  • tilde (starting with ~)
  • variable
  • relative

If the folder used for settings is a different kind of path from the config folder, the report records that second kind too.

Why

The report records only the shape of the path, not the path itself, so your actual folder names are not sent.
