What
Claude Code now has messages saying whether a background session was restarted. A background session is a conversation with Claude running out of view. The reasons it gives for not restarting are:
the session was idle (the conversation is saved)
the session was stopped (the conversation is saved)
the session has no saved conversation to resume
There is also a countdown message.
Why
You get a visible reason when a background session does not come back, rather than it silently staying down.
