Unclear It is not clear what the number controls, such as a time limit or a count.
Claude Code now reads a number from a server-controlled setting, tengu_maple_ferry, which falls back to 0 when the server sends nothing. It applies only to tool calls made by subagents running in the background, outside the main session. A subagent is a helper Claude starts to work on part of a task. The number is treated as 0 when the call is nested inside another call, was started by a hook, comes from an unnamed plugin, or meets two other conditions.
This lets something about background subagent calls be tuned from the server. With the fallback of 0, nothing is expected to change unless a value is sent.
