What

An artifact is a finished piece Claude creates for you, such as slides or a design. Claude can now be told to ask you a few questions in a Visualizer form before creating one. It skips the questions when your request already covers the scope, the audience and the look, or when you say not to ask.

This happens only when all of these hold:

  • CLAUDE_CODE_ARTIFACT_ASK_FIRST is set to true, or, if it is not set, a remote switch is on; that switch is off unless turned on remotely.
  • You are working interactively, not as an automated agent.
  • The Visualizer tools are loaded.
Why

When it is on, a request for slides or a design starts with a short questionnaire, which can help Claude match what you had in mind. Set CLAUDE_CODE_ARTIFACT_ASK_FIRST yourself to turn it on or off.
