What

GitHub sends a notification to the owner of any @name written in a pull request, issue or comment. The instructions Claude gets for its Bash tool (the tool it uses to run commands such as gh) now include a rule about this:

  • Write a bare @name only for a real GitHub login that is meant to be notified.
  • Put roles, placeholders and code, such as @human, @reviewer or @types/node, in backticks, or leave out the @.

The same rule also appears in the instructions for agents and in the instructions used when a long conversation is summarised to save space. The Bash tool's description changed in this release to carry it.

Why

Pull requests and issues that Claude writes should no longer ping strangers who happen to own a GitHub account called something like reviewer, or a package name.
