What
Claude Code creates a temporary folder for its own use. If it cannot create it because the disk is full or your disk quota (the space allowed to your account) is used up, it now shows a clear error. The error tells you to free space on that disk or set CLAUDE_CODE_TMPDIR to a folder on another disk, then try again. Before, the raw system error was shown.
Claude Code also checks the disk after shell commands run. It reports:
less than 10 MB of free space
running low on file slots, the limited number of files a disk can hold
a test write that failed
When it reports one of these, Claude is told to warn you before deleting anything.
Why
On a full disk you get a message that says what to do, instead of confusing failures from shell commands.
