What
The sandbox is a fenced-off area that limits which files and network hosts commands can reach. On Windows, starting it involves setting file permissions, which can be slow. Claude Code now prints two notices to the terminal:
At start: "Starting the sandbox... Setting file permissions can take a few minutes, mostly the first time in a large project."
On exit or interruption: a message saying it is removing this session's sandbox file permissions, that this can take a few minutes, and not to close the window.
The notices appear only on Windows and only when Claude Code is running in an interactive terminal window, not when its output is piped to another program or a file.
Why
Without these messages, sandbox start and cleanup on Windows looked like a silent hang. Now it is clear the wait is expected, and that closing the window during cleanup is a bad idea.
