Unclear It is not clear when Claude Code switches to this mode.
What
Compaction means shrinking a conversation by replacing earlier parts with a summary, so it fits in what the model can read at once. When a prompt turns out to be too long, Claude Code compacts on the spot. Normally it keeps the most recent exchanges word for word.
There is now a mode in which it summarizes every exchange and keeps none of them as they were. This mode also turns on the fallback route that compaction uses when its first attempt fails. Before, only a separate setting could turn that route on.
Why
This gives Claude Code one more way to recover when a conversation has grown too long to send.
