When a prompt turns out to be too long, Claude Code compacts on the spot. Normally it keeps the most recent exchanges word for word.\n\nThere is now a mode in which it summarizes every exchange and keeps none of them as they were. This mode also turns on the fallback route that compaction uses when its first attempt fails. Before, only a separate setting could turn that route on.\n\n**Why**\n\nThis gives Claude Code one more way to recover when a conversation has grown too long to send.\n\n- Area: Compaction\n- Tier: You'll notice\n- Useful: 3\/5\n- Signal: 2\/5\n- Scope: individual\n- Heads-up: no"}
