What
When Claude tries to read a file from a project and the file is bigger than the limit for downloading during a session, Claude Code now gives one of two errors:
project_upload_too_large: the upload has no text extract, meaning no plain-text version of the file was produced.
project_original_too_large: the file does have extracted text. This code was already in use.
Both messages tell Claude to let you know that the file cannot be opened here. Before, a single error stated the file size and the limit, with either the project_original_too_large code or no code at all.
Why
Claude gets clearer instructions about oversized project files, so it is more likely to tell you plainly that a file cannot be opened instead of trying something else.
