What

Claude Code runs git commands with a cleaned-up set of environment variables (named values a program reads when it starts). That set now includes one more variable, set to "1". Git is also now started from the root folder of the filesystem rather than with no starting folder given.

Why

Git looks for a repository starting from the folder it runs in. Starting from the root means it does not pick up a repository from wherever Claude Code happens to be.
