When you change the "Use auto mode during plan" setting, Claude Code now waits for the setting to be written before it changes the permission mode, which is the rule for which actions Claude may take without asking you. If writing the setting fails, it reports an error. Before, the save and the permission change happened together.
Why
A failed save no longer quietly changes your permission mode while the saved setting stays the same.
