Teammate mailboxes are how agents working together as a team pass messages to each other. In a diskless session (one that keeps its data in a storage service rather than on the local disk), Claude Code now logs a message when it has no storage to use for a mailbox, saying that nothing was read or written. The message lists three possible causes:
- the storage-backend feature is off
- no storage service was handed to the session
- the agent or team name is not a valid storage key
The feature behind this is off unless it is switched on remotely, and CLAUDE_CODE_HOVER_REST overrides it. A session with it on passes CLAUDE_CODE_HOVER_REST=1 to any child session it starts.
In diskless sessions, teammate mailboxes only work when this feature is on. Before, a mailbox that could not be used gave no explanation; the new message tells you which of the three conditions to check.
