What
Claude Code sometimes asks the API to count tokens, the small chunks that text is measured in. When that request fails, Claude Code now reports the failure first, and then goes on to its existing fallback for gateways that answer that token counting is not supported.
Why
The failure is now likely recorded for diagnosing problems instead of passing unnoticed.
