What
A background session is a Claude Code session that keeps running without you watching it. Claude Code changes which environment variables it passes to a new background session. An environment variable is a named value set in your shell that programs can read.
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL is no longer passed when the background session starts in a different folder from the current one. This variable sends requests through a proxy or gateway instead of the default address. Claude Code notes in its log when it leaves the variable out.
If you route Claude Code through a proxy or gateway and start background sessions in other directories, those sessions do not pick up your ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. Set it for those folders yourself if they should use the same endpoint.
