What
Claude Code's input box has a vim mode, which lets you edit text with the keys of the vim editor. The input box now reports its editing state to the rest of Claude Code: which vim mode it is in, and whether Esc belongs to vim. Esc counts as vim's when you are outside normal mode or partway through a command.
Why
Esc is also how you stop Claude mid-reply. With this, Claude Code can tell an Esc meant for vim apart from one meant to interrupt, so finishing a vim command is less likely to stop Claude's turn.
