What
Compaction is when Claude Code shortens a long conversation so that it still fits in what Claude can hold. Afterwards it shows a short notice. That notice now reads either Conversation compacted or Conversation summarized, followed by a hint that depends on where the compaction happened. Before, it always ended with (ctrl+o for history).
When Claude Code is not running in fullscreen, the conversation is also treated as a fresh one on screen after the old messages are replaced.
Why
The history hint may now look different, or may not appear at all, after compaction.
