What

Compaction is when Claude Code shortens a long conversation so that it still fits in what Claude can hold. It leaves a marker in the conversation to show where that happened. Before, when Claude Code looked for the most recent marker and found none, it kept no messages. Now it can fall back to an earlier compaction marker that recorded which messages were preserved.

This fallback runs only when two remote switches both read on and one further condition holds. Earlier readings of the main switch, tengu_cheeky_toucan, came back off for this site's account and for an anonymous account.

A second switch, tengu_goofy_hare, now affects how messages are joined back together. It falls back to off when the server sends nothing.

Why

This is a change being prepared to how messages are carried across compaction. Until the switches are on, Claude Code behaves as it did before.

Feature flag
tengu_cheeky_toucan Not enough to say

Nothing here resolved what this flag was doing on this version, so nothing here should be read as on or off.

This account: no value returned · anonymous baseline: off · compiled default in v2.1.301: not a boolean we can read

These values were read against a different version of Claude Code, so treat them as the nearest reading available instead of one taken on this release.

What has happened since
Flag reading moved The flag server now returns nothing at all, having stopped carrying it for tengu_cheeky_toucan, read as this account. A reading is one sample. Claude Code evaluates its flags remotely, so no client sees the targeting rule behind a value and this says nothing about your account.
