What
A session is one run of Claude Code. While a session is waiting on background work, Claude Code sends a regular signal to keep it alive. Each time it does, it now writes the debug event session_keepalive_background_wait, which lists the reasons for the wait.
Why
This only adds information for diagnosing problems. What Claude Code does is unchanged.
