Unclear It is not clear what starts the idle preparation or whether that path runs for anyone yet.
What
Compaction is how Claude Code shortens a long conversation by replacing earlier parts with a summary, so the conversation fits within what the model can read at once. Claude Code can prepare that summary in advance, before it is needed.
That advance preparation can now be started because the session is idle, meaning nothing is happening in it. When it starts for this reason:
the usual check on whether advance preparation is allowed is skipped
failures are not counted and do not use up the limit on retries
the record of the pending summary notes that it was started while idle
The usage reports sent when a prepared summary fails or is ready now also say what started it.
Why
Preparing the summary during quiet moments means a later compaction may finish faster, because some of the work is already done.
