What
A background agent is a helper agent that keeps working while you do other things. Claude Code can save a checkpoint of one, a snapshot of where it was, so it can continue later. There are two new messages for agents that were checkpointed this way:
the agent could not be resumed
the agent was not resumed, and sending it a message asks for it to be resumed again
Why
You are now told when a background agent did not pick up where it left off, and in the second case how to get it going again.
