What
MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers are add-ons that give Claude extra tools and data. They can return listings of the resources they offer. Claude Code now limits how much of a listing it reads:
About the first 16 MB of a listing
About 1 million characters that take extra work to clean up and standardise
A directory listing that is too large returns an error that lists no entries. Before, every entry was read with no size limit.
Why
This protects Claude Code from an MCP server that sends a huge or harmful listing.
