Claude Code has a new way to pass metadata from MCP servers to plugins. MCP servers are outside programs that give Claude Code extra tools, and plugins are add-on packages that extend Claude Code. Metadata here means extra labelled information attached to a request or a result.
- Values that a server addresses under
claude/pluginsandanthropic/sourcesare copied into the result. - Each value is held to a size limit. A value over the limit is left out, logged, and named in a
claude/omittedlist. - Request metadata set by hooks (commands Claude Code runs automatically at certain points) is checked.
All of this is off unless it is switched on remotely. One part runs regardless: the keys reserved for plugins are always removed from request metadata that hooks set.
This prepares a channel for MCP servers to hand information to plugins. For now, the only change you are likely to notice is that hooks can no longer set the plugin-reserved keys themselves.
