What
Claude Code saves checkpoints, which are snapshots of your files it can go back to, using git. To do this, it builds an index, git's list of files being recorded. Before, that index was always written inside your repository's git folder.
Now:
the index can be built in a temporary folder instead
checkpoint commands run with core.splitIndex=false, which turns off git's split-index feature
Claude Code's own temporary folders are left out when it lists untracked files
Why
This keeps checkpoint files from cluttering your git folder and avoids problems in repositories that use git's split-index feature.
