Unclear It is not stated in which situations Claude Code supplies the size limit that turns this on.
What
When Claude reads a project document and its estimated size in tokens (the units the model counts text in) is over a limit, Claude Code can now save it to a local file and hand back a local_file pointer instead of the full text. Before, the text came back inline up to a byte limit.
If saving the file fails, the full document is returned inline with a warning that it could not be saved.
This only happens when Claude Code supplies a size limit for the read.
Why
It changes how large project documents reach Claude: a pointer to a file in place of a long block of text in the conversation.
