Syntax highlighting gives up on code blocks that take too much work

Code highlighting now has a work limit based on text length, nesting and embedded languages, and stops highlighting a block that goes over it

Syntax highlighting is the colouring of code shown in Claude Code's output. It now runs under a work limit. The limit depends on:

  • the length of the text
  • how deeply the code is nested
  • how many other languages are embedded inside it

If highlighting a block needs more work than the limit allows, Claude Code abandons highlighting for that block.

Why

Some unusual code blocks could make highlighting take a very long time and leave Claude Code hanging. The limit stops that from happening.
