What
rewind_conversation is a request that programs driving Claude Code can send to take a conversation back to an earlier message. It now works out up front which messages the rewind will cut. If the rewind is then refused, or another action gets there first, those messages are put back in the queue instead of being lost.
When the rewind has to interrupt a turn that is still running, it now keeps tool calls that were detached from the turn and left running in the background. A tool call is one action Claude takes, such as running a command or reading a file. After a successful rewind, Claude Code also tidies up its record of those background tool calls for the session.
Separately, Claude Code now keeps a record for each tool call's permission checks. A permission check is the step where Claude Code decides whether an action is allowed. The record notes each round of checking, the results, and any refused writes.
Why
Rewinding while Claude is in the middle of a turn should be more reliable, and should no longer throw away queued messages or tool calls running in the background.
