What probably matters to youSection of the release
What
Claude Code has code to compress the requests it sends to the model API using gzip, in blocks. It is controlled by the environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_GZIP_REQUEST_BODY_BLOCKS or by a value the server can send. Only the values 1 or 2 turn it on. Any other value, or no value at all, leaves it off.
When it is on, Claude Code:
checks the compressed request it sent
retries when the server rejects the compressed request
can switch compression off, in some cases until the next conversation
clears its stored compression data when you change account
Usage data also gains fields about this compression.
Why
This is a new way of sending requests over the network that stays off unless switched on remotely or by setting the environment variable.
Nothing here resolved what this flag was doing on this version, so nothing here should be read as on or off.
This account: no value returned · anonymous baseline: no value returned · compiled default in v2.1.287: not a boolean we can read
These values were read against a different version of Claude Code, so treat them as the nearest reading available instead of one taken on this release.
Flag reading movedThe flag server now returns null for tengu_buzzing_pike, read as this account.A reading is one sample. Claude Code evaluates its flags remotely, so no client sees the targeting rule behind a value and this says nothing about your account.
