It is controlled by the environment variable `CLAUDE_CODE_GZIP_REQUEST_BODY_BLOCKS` or by a value the server can send. Only the values 1 or 2 turn it on. Any other value, or no value at all, leaves it off.\n\nWhen it is on, Claude Code:\n\n- checks the compressed request it sent\n\n- retries when the server rejects the compressed request\n\n- can switch compression off, in some cases until the next conversation\n\n- clears its stored compression data when you change account\n\nUsage data also gains fields about this compression.\n\n**Why**\n\nThis is a new way of sending requests over the network that stays off unless switched on remotely or by setting the environment variable.\n\n- Flag `tengu_buzzing_pike`: Not enough to say (read for one account on one subscription tier against v2.1.287; this account: no value returned, anonymous baseline: no value returned, compiled default: not a boolean we can read) These values were read against a different version of Claude Code, so treat them as the nearest reading available instead of one taken on this release.\n- Area: API\n- Names: `CLAUDE_CODE_GZIP_REQUEST_BODY_BLOCKS`\n- Tier: Use it now\n- Useful: 5\/5\n- Signal: 4\/5"}
