What

A new built-in plugin, cc-plugin-you-should-know, ships with Claude Code. A plugin is an add-on that extends Claude Code. While Claude works, a side agent (a separate helper running alongside the main conversation) may offer one learning topic above the prompt box.

  • The suggestion offers choices such as Learn more, Knew this already and Dismiss. Learn more can produce an explanation or a private learning page.
  • The plugin is registered with defaultEnabled: !1, meaning it is off until you turn it on.
  • It is not registered when Claude Code runs with the local-agent entrypoint.
  • An availability check leaves out HIPAA, ZDR and LDR accounts and also checks one more gate.
  • It hooks into prompt.submit, command.run, turn.step, ui.render and session.detach, the points where you send a prompt, run a command, Claude takes a step, the screen is drawn and a session is detached.
  • It reads the environment variables CLAUDE_CODE_YOU_SHOULD_KNOW_DEBUG and USER_TYPE, and keeps an aboutOpen state value. Setting CLAUDE_CODE_YOU_SHOULD_KNOW_DEBUG shows a debug row for each check.
  • /plugin disable cc-plugin-you-should-know@builtin turns it off.

Why

This is a complete feature with its own prompt, but it stays off unless enabled and depends on account type and a gate. If you do turn it on and find the suggestions distracting, /plugin disable cc-plugin-you-should-know@builtin removes them.
