What
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard Claude Code uses to connect to outside servers that give it extra tools. Claude Code keeps a note of whether each server spoke an older or newer version of that protocol, so it can connect the right way next time.
That note used to be kept only for servers reached through claude.ai. It is now kept for other kinds of server as well. Claude Code also changes its assumption about a server's protocol version when an error comes back on a later request, not just on the first one.
