What
Claude Code sets separate size limits for attached images and documents depending on how it is connected. The limits apply to the file after it is encoded as base64 (a way of turning a file into plain text so it can be sent in a message).
Session and relay connections: 1,572,864 bytes (1.5 MB) for images and 3,380,000 bytes for documents
Bridge and direct connections: 1,048,576 bytes (1 MB) for images and 0 bytes for documents
Why
This may change how large an image or PDF you can attach, depending on how you are connected to Claude Code.
