What
Compaction is when Claude Code shortens a long conversation by replacing older parts with a summary. The saved conversation marks where that happened. When loading a saved conversation, Claude Code scans only the start of each line, and the marker could fall past that point if earlier parts of the line were large. It now also recognises the marker by a second field that appears within the scanned part.
Why
Resuming a long session after compaction should no longer miss where it was compacted.
