Programs such as code editors can drive Claude Code through the SDK, a toolkit for connecting to it. When such a program first connects, Claude Code replies to the opening handshake. That reply can now include capabilities, listing the capabilities already settled at connect time. It is sent only when the list is not empty.
This list is a subset of the one sent later in the session's start-up message, so a capability missing from it may still arrive there.
An editor or other host program can read what Claude Code supports as soon as it connects, before the first turn begins.
