What

When Claude Code uploads an attached file for a session linked to another surface, it used to send the file exactly as it was. It can now convert images in BMP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF and AVIF formats to PNG or JPEG before uploading.

  • The original is uploaded instead when the image has several pages, is cut off, is rotated or mirrored, is larger than the preview size, or is over the upload limit.
  • If uploading the converted copy fails with http_413, http_5xx or network_error, the original is uploaded instead. The failure message includes "could not make a preview copy of".
  • originalsOnly turns conversion off. It is set when the request asks for it, or when the server-controlled switch tengu_playful_panda is off.
  • The chat upload now returns the file's file_uuid together with details of the copy, such as whether it is an image and its media type.

Why

Images in formats that cannot be previewed directly should now show as previews. When a copy cannot be made, the original file still gets through.
