Fullscreen views in Claude Code use the alternate screen, a separate screen the terminal can switch to and back from. When Claude Code enters it, it now remembers how your normal screen looked. When it leaves, it moves the cursor and clears the old content so the normal screen is redrawn cleanly.
This is skipped:
- when the output is not going to a terminal
- when the screen has been handed off to something else
- when a screen reader is enabled
- on Windows
- when the terminal was resized in the meantime
