The Read tool, which Claude uses to open and look at files, can now accept a result that was produced by another process or on another machine. When that happens, Claude Code tidies the result before using it:
- the file path in the result is rewritten
- output and error text are capped at 2000 characters
- the usual limit on result size is applied again
- notes about image dimensions are added for images
The NotebookEdit tool, which edits Jupyter notebooks, handles results from another process in a similar way. It rebuilds them with length limits on the cell ID, the error and the old cell text, and leaves out the file contents. It also skips its usual clean-up of the notebook path in one new case.
Claude Code now refuses a tool call in two cases:
- The call names a machine that is not attached to the session. The message starts with "No machine named".
- The call was served for a different session. The message explains that "a call served for another session does not travel there".
These changes lay the groundwork for running tools on a separate machine connected to a session, for example a device attached to a session running in the cloud. The refusals stop a tool call from going to a machine that does not exist, or being delivered to the wrong session.
It is not clear what switches on sending tool calls to another machine, or whether any reader can use it yet.
