What
MCP servers are add-ons that give Claude extra tools. When Claude Code connects in automatic mode, it has to agree on a protocol version with the server. If the server refused the first handshake and a separate check had timed out, Claude Code used to retry with the newer protocol only when the refusal named the versions the server supports.
It now retries with the first modern version in that case even when the refusal carries no version list or is a different kind of error.
Why
Servers that speak the newer protocol but refuse the first handshake in an unexpected way should now connect instead of failing.
