MCP servers are add-on programs that give Claude Code extra tools. When connecting, Claude Code tells the server it supports elicitation, a way for the server to ask you for input, including by form or by link. Servers built on Java MCP SDK 0.17.0 or older reject the form and link parts and refuse to connect.
Claude Code now recognises that rejection and reconnects once without advertising form and link elicitation. Previously the connection simply failed. This applies only when Claude Code was advertising link (URL) elicitation.
If the connection still fails in a way that matches those older SDKs, the error is replaced with advice: set "bareElicitationCapability": true for that server, or upgrade to Java MCP SDK 0.17.1 or later (Spring AI 1.0.7+ or 1.1.6+).
MCP servers built with older Java MCP SDK or Spring AI versions used to fail to connect at all. Most should now connect without any change on your side.
