A modifier is a key held down with another, such as ctrl or alt. If a custom keybinding uses a word before a "+" that is not a known modifier, as in "foo+x", Claude Code now reports an error. The error says which key the binding actually applies to and suggests one of two fixes:
a corrected modifier spelling, with aliases such as control, option, command, super and win
spaces between keys meant to be pressed one after another, as in "ctrl+x ctrl+s"
Why
A misspelt modifier used to be accepted without comment, so the binding quietly landed on the wrong key.
