What
The line under the prompt shows the permission mode, which is how Claude Code asks before acting. It is now built from pieces that each know their own width: the mode pill, the count of background tasks, the count of artifacts, and memory and link badges.
When space runs short:
- "N background" becomes "N bg"
- the hint is dropped; it is either the down-arrow shortcut for managing tasks or the shift+tab shortcut for cycling modes
The right-hand side takes at most 40% of the width and ends with an ellipsis (...) when cut. In Bash mode the footer shows "shell mode".
Why
In a narrow terminal window the footer now shortens its parts instead of overflowing.
