Reference / Environment variables

CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_BG_EXIT_HANDOFF

A Claude Code environment variable, read out of the shipped bundle. It has been in the build since v2.1.196, including the newest one read.

What it is

Set to 1 to stop a [background session's](/docs/en/agent-view) running background shell commands, dynamic workflows, and, as of v2.1.198, background subagents when the [supervisor](/docs/en/agent-view#the-supervisor-process) stops, restarts, or updates that session's process, instead of handing them to the session's next process. Affects only that handoff: backgrounding a session with or [/background](/docs/en/agent-view#from-inside-a-session) still carries in-flight work over, and CLAUDE_DISABLE_ADOPT turns off both. Requires Claude Code v2.1.196 or later

Anthropic's own wording. Read off Environment variables, captured 2026-08-28.

Presence across releases

ReleasesReadingDeclared typeDefault
2.1.245 – 2.1.250 5 releases never mined
2.1.196 – 2.1.243 47 releases in the build bool

A row reading never mined is a release with no archived bundle behind it. Nothing was read out of it, so nothing here says whether the name was in it. A declared type or a default is only ever what that release's own bundle stated.

Changelog entries naming it

  1. v2.1.235Background work handoff on exit can be switched off

Set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_BG_EXIT_HANDOFF to stop Claude handing off background work when you exit.

Documentation pages

A reference table page is one whose own table defines this name, and it is where the description above came from. A page that mentions it carries the name somewhere in its text and may say nothing about it at all. Every page carrying it.

Names beside it

Every environment variable in the inventory starting claude_code_disable_bg, up to twelve of them.

CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_BG_SHELL_PRESSURE_REAPSet to 1 to stop Claude Code from terminating [background shell commands](/docs/en/interactive-mode#background-bash-commands) when the operating system reports memory pressure. By default, on macOS and Linux, Claude Code terminates a background shell started in the main session on a memory-pressure signal once the session has been idle for 30 minutes and no turn or subagent is running. Windows has no memory-pressure signal, so this variable has no effect there. Requires Claude Code v2.1.193 or later 2.1.193

Read out of the published npm bundle release by release, and out of Anthropic's own documentation as this site captured it. Nothing on this page is a description anybody here wrote about what the environment variable does. All environment variables.
