577577
578Tune one model before you add a second: sweep effort on your current model first, because most workloads end there, and if the sweep shows a gap, price the stronger model alone at low effort. Build a pairing only if it beats the single model’s whole curve of score against spend. The multi-model results on this page were judged against the same model at lower effort and against the next model down running alone, which is the comparison to run on your own workload.

580580The following table compares the two strategies:

from line 630
630630* Routine work with a long cost tail (an easy slice of BrowseComp[4](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#refs))
631631* Work larger than one context window (an internal defect-search benchmark[8](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#refs))
632632
633When the work is one dependent chain, or fits in a single context without a long cost tail, the orchestrator’s model alone at lower effort came out ahead in every case measured, also on earlier models (the harder BrowseComp set and DeepWideSearch[6](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#refs)); independent external work reports the same pattern[5](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#refs).

634634
635635To build an orchestrator, use [multiagent orchestration](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/managed-agents/multiagent-orchestration) in Claude Managed Agents: configure an orchestrator agent and worker agents that it can call, each with its own model.

640640
641The [Model selection matrix](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/choosing-a-model#model-selection-matrix) lists Claude Haiku 5.5 for sub-agent tasks; before you use it as a worker, [measure it on your own workload](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#measure-on-your-own-workload).
642
643641The following chart plots the defect-search benchmark’s configurations by cost and score:
644642
645643<Frame>
from line 648
650648
651649* **Routine work with a long cost tail:** measure this case first, for accuracy as well as cost. The measurement behind it covers only problems that the delegated configuration answered correctly in every run (reference 4).
652650* **Work larger than one context window:** delegate partitions to workers. Lowering effort cannot help, because the bill is the reading itself: on the defect-search benchmark[8](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#refs), Claude Fable 5.1 alone cost $468 USD to $552 USD per run across its three effort settings and took 15 to 20 hours. With earlier-model workers, delegation cost less and finished sooner, for a lower score.
651* **Claude Haiku 5.5 subagents on coding tasks:** compare them with lower effort first. On an internal coding benchmark on Claude Managed Agents, they were an alternative to lowering effort, not better. Adding them to Claude Opus 5.5 at `medium`, with a short delegation prompt, cut cost per attempt by 32% and the pass rate by about 4 percentage points (95% interval 1.3 to 7.1), about what a mix of `low` and `medium` without subagents would give at that cost[29](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence#refs).
653652
654653## Measure on your own workload
655654
from line 1131
11321131 * **Results, 20-issue run:** On the 20-issue run, where the job with no lever cost $0.42 USD a run, context editing cost 73% more, compaction ran once near the end of each run and cost 7% less, and the prune rewrote nothing, because no search result was over its 2,000-character threshold.
11331132 * **Results, long run:** On the long run, where the job with no lever cost $1.09 USD a run, the prune cost 39% less, compaction 32% less, and context editing 4% more.
11341133 * **Cache reads, long runs:** In the long runs with the prune, 89% of prompt tokens were read from the cache on the first request after a task boundary and 81% on the other requests. Over the whole of the long runs, 85% of prompt tokens were read from the cache with the prune and 85% with context editing, against 95% with no lever.
1134
113529. **Internal coding benchmark (subagent measurement):**
1136
1137 * **What was measured:** 134 repository coding tasks, each graded pass or fail by tests the agent cannot see, five attempts per task in each of three runs, October 21 to 23, 2026, on [Claude Managed Agents](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/managed-agents/overview) with its own [multiagent orchestration](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/managed-agents/multiagent-orchestration) (the `multiagent_20261001` type): one predefined agent as the subagent, with inline agents and dynamic workflows turned off.
1138 * **Configurations:** Claude Opus 5.5 alone at `medium`, its default, and at `low`; and Claude Opus 5.5 at `medium` with Claude Haiku 5.5 subagents at `medium`, once with no added prompt and once with a 113-word delegation prompt as the orchestrator’s system prompt. A fifth configuration, with a longer prompt, is not reported. The evaluation set no thinking option, so thinking ran at its default: on, with the model choosing when to think.
1139 * **Tools:** Every agent used two custom tools, a shell and a file editor that the evaluation runs in each attempt’s own sandbox, in place of the platform’s built-in tools. As part of the evaluation’s safety setup, their calls went through an extra check. In the documented setup, [permission policies do not apply to custom tools](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/managed-agents/permission-policies#custom-tools).
1140 * **Results:** Attempts passed and cost per attempt were 72.1% and $4.78 USD for Claude Opus 5.5 alone at `medium`; 68.8% and $3.35 USD with subagents and no added prompt; 67.9% and $3.27 USD with subagents and the prompt; and 63.0% and $1.84 USD alone at `low`.
1141 * **Compared with Claude Opus 5.5 alone at `medium`:** With the prompt, 32% less cost (95% interval 29% to 35%) and 4.2 percentage points fewer passed (1.3 to 7.1). With no added prompt, 30% less (27% to 33%) and 3.3 fewer (0.8 to 5.8). Alone at `low`, 62% less (59% to 64%) and 9.1 fewer (5.0 to 13.3), a comparison added after the runs. Differences are paired by task within each run, and the intervals are bootstrap intervals over the 134 tasks.
1142 * **Compared with lower effort:** Sending a share of tasks to `low` and the rest to `medium` gives a straight line between those two results, a calculation and not a run. At their own cost, the configurations with subagents passed 0.5 percentage points more than that line with the prompt (2.3 fewer to 3.2 more) and 1.1 more with no added prompt (1.2 fewer to 3.3 more): neither above nor below it. The cost per passed attempt was $6.63 USD alone at `medium`, $4.86 USD with subagents and no added prompt, $4.81 USD with the prompt, and $2.92 USD at `low`.
1143 * **How priced:** Costs are token costs at list prices with 5-minute prompt caching, each request priced on its own prompt length ([Long context pricing](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing#long-context-pricing)), and exclude session runtime. The costs leave out the evaluation’s extra check on tool calls; with it counted, the saving with the prompt is 27% (25% to 30%).
1144 * **What counts as a failure:** An attempt counts as a failure if a safety check stopped it, if the platform’s safeguard refused a turn, or if the evaluation voided it because it could not confirm that its safety checks saw every step. Voided attempts fell only on the configurations with subagents: 72 of 2,010 with the prompt, 57 of them in one run. With that configuration’s part of the run made again, it passed 3.6 percentage points fewer than Claude Opus 5.5 alone (1.0 to 6.3). With every attempt that a safety check stopped or the evaluation voided left out on both sides instead, it passed 1.7 fewer (4.4 fewer to 1.1 more). So part of the loss, but not all of it, comes from the evaluation’s own rules. One attempt of Claude Opus 5.5 alone at `medium`, cut at the three-hour limit, has no result and is left out; with subagents, the same cut counts as a failure.

1142## Why use Skills
1243
1344Skills are reusable, filesystem-based resources that give Claude domain-specific expertise: workflows, context, and best practices that turn a general-purpose agent into a specialist. Unlike prompts (conversation-level instructions for one-off tasks), Skills load on demand, so you don’t have to repeat the same guidance across conversations.

They are provided “as-is” without any uptime, support, or continuity commitment, and they depend on a third-party network provider (Cloudflare) that makes no availability commitment for the underlying transport. Anthropic may modify or discontinue MCP tunnels at any time.

41MCP tunnels let you connect Claude to Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers that run inside your private network. Traffic flows over an outbound-only connection, so you don’t need to open inbound firewall ports, expose services to the public internet, or allowlist Anthropic’s IP ranges on your origin.

33**API support**: Usage differs by product.
34
35* **Messages API**: Add an advisor tool (type `advisor_20260301`) to the request’s `tools`.
36* **Managed Agents**: Set `advisor` in the agent’s `multiagent` block; there are no `max_uses` or `max_tokens` options.
37
738The advisor tool lets a faster, lower-cost **executor model** consult a higher-intelligence **advisor model** mid-generation for strategic guidance. The advisor reads the full conversation and produces a plan or course correction, and the executor continues with the task.
839
940This pattern fits long-horizon agentic workloads (coding agents, computer use, multistep research pipelines) where most turns are mechanical but having an excellent plan is crucial. You get close to advisor-solo quality while the bulk of token generation occurs at executor-model rates. For measured results, including how the benefit shrinks as the executor’s own capability approaches the advisor’s, see [Optimizing for cost and intelligence](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/optimizing-for-cost-and-intelligence).

3259## When to use it
3360
3461The advisor fits these configurations:
from line 369
342369| `advisor_redacted_result` | `encrypted_content`, `stop_reason` | The advisor model returns encrypted output. |
343370
344371<Note>
345 Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Opus 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Mythos 5, and Claude Haiku 5.5 advisors return the encrypted `advisor_redacted_result`. Every other advisor model in the [compatibility table](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/advisor-tool#model-compatibility) returns the plaintext `advisor_result`. To read the advice text in your own responses, use an advisor that returns plaintext, such as `claude-opus-4-8`, where your executor’s row in the [compatibility table](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/advisor-tool#model-compatibility) lists one. Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Opus 5, Claude Fable 5, and Claude Mythos 5 executors pair only with advisors that return the encrypted form, so on those executors the advice text isn’t readable in the response.
372 Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Opus 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Mythos 5, and Claude Haiku 5.5 advisors return the encrypted `advisor_redacted_result`. Every other advisor model in [Model compatibility](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/advisor-tool#model-compatibility) returns the plaintext `advisor_result`. To read the advice text in your own responses, use an advisor that returns plaintext, such as `claude-opus-4-8`, where [Model compatibility](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/advisor-tool#model-compatibility) lists one for your executor.

348375Here is the same request sent twice, identical except for the advisor `model` in the tool definition, showing both variants.
from line 1833
18061833
18071834The executor model (the top-level `model` field) and the advisor model (the `model` field inside the tool definition) must form a valid pair. The advisor must be Claude Sonnet 4.6 or a more capable model, and it must be at least as capable as the executor. Models of equal capability (for example, Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Opus 4.8) can advise each other.

9</Note>
10
1137The bash tool is a [client tool](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/how-tool-use-works): Claude doesn’t run commands itself. When you include the tool in a request, Claude replies with a `tool_use` block that names the command to run. Your application runs that command in a bash session it owns and returns the output in a `tool_result` block.
1238
1339Your application keeps one bash process alive across tool calls, so state persists between commands. The working directory, environment variables, and any files a command creates are still there for the next command.

49The code execution tool has three current versions, and every [supported model](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/code-execution-tool#availability-feature-support) accepts all three. Each version builds on the previous one:
4950
5051* `code_execution_20250825` supports Bash commands and file operations.
5152* `code_execution_20260120` adds REPL state persistence and [programmatic tool calling](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/programmatic-tool-calling) from within the sandbox. Claude Haiku 4.5 accepts the `code_execution_20260120` and `code_execution_20260521` tool types, but programmatic tool calling and the REPL state persistence that depends on it aren’t available on it, so the newer versions behave like `code_execution_20250825` there.
5253* `code_execution_20260521` is the same runtime as `code_execution_20260120`. The difference is that the tool description tells Claude about the 90-second wall-clock limit on each Python cell in programmatic tool calling, so Claude can budget long-running cells. A cell that exceeds the limit returns a normal code execution result with a non-zero `return_code` and a `detection_timeout` status message in its output. This is separate from the `execution_time_exceeded` [error code](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/code-execution-tool#errors), which the API returns when a whole tool call exceeds the maximum execution time.
5354
55For [Claude Mythos Preview](https://anthropic.com/glasswing), code execution is supported on the Claude API and Microsoft Foundry.
56
5457None of the three tool versions requires an `anthropic-beta` header. The legacy code execution beta headers remain valid opt-ins.
5558
5659The examples on this page use `code_execution_20250825`, which covers the Bash and file operations they demonstrate and behaves the same way on every supported model; use `code_execution_20260120` or later when you need programmatic tool calling or REPL state persistence. The current [web search](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool) and [web fetch](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-fetch-tool) tools (`web_search_20260209`, `web_fetch_20260209`, and later) require `code_execution_20260120` or later as their code execution version.
5760
58Older tool versions aren’t guaranteed to stay compatible with newer models. When you adopt a new model, check [Tool versions](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/code-execution-tool#tool-versions) and [Compatibility](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/code-execution-tool#compatibility), and prefer the newest tool version your integration supports.

5962
6063To check whether a model accepts the code execution tool before you send a request, read its `capabilities.server_tools.code_execution.supported` value from the Models API. Don’t use the top-level `capabilities.code_execution` value for this. It reports whether code running in this tool can call your request’s other tools, as in programmatic tool calling. [Using the Models API](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/models/overview#using-the-models-api) describes both fields.

21982205Computer use is a client-side tool. All screenshots, mouse actions, keyboard inputs, and any files involved in a session are captured and stored in your environment, not by Anthropic. Anthropic processes the screenshot images and action requests in real time as part of the API call. Retention for those API requests is governed by [API and data retention](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/manage-claude/api-and-data-retention).

3535Programmatic tool calling allows Claude to write code that calls your tools programmatically within a [code execution](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/code-execution-tool) container, rather than requiring round trips through the model for each tool call. This reduces latency for multi-tool workflows and decreases token consumption by allowing Claude to filter or process data before it reaches the model’s context window. On agentic search benchmarks such as [BrowseComp](https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.12516) and [DeepSearchQA](https://github.com/google-deepmind/deepsearchqa), which test multistep web research and complex information retrieval, adding programmatic tool calling on top of basic search tools improved performance by an average of 11 percent while using 24 percent fewer input tokens (see [Improved web search with dynamic filtering](https://claude.com/blog/improved-web-search-with-dynamic-filtering)).

737Setting `strict: true` on a tool definition guarantees Claude’s tool inputs match your JSON Schema by constraining the model’s token sampling to schema-valid outputs (a technique called grammar-constrained sampling). This page covers why strict mode matters for agents, how to enable it, and common use cases. For the supported JSON Schema subset, see [JSON Schema limitations](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/structured-outputs#json-schema-limitations). For non-strict schema guidance, see [Define tools](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/define-tools).
from line 1151
11211151
11221152Strict tool use is HIPAA eligible, but **protected health information (PHI) must not be included in tool schema definitions**. The API caches compiled schemas separately from message content, and these cached schemas do not receive the same PHI protections as prompts and responses. Do not include PHI in `input_schema` property names, `enum` values, `const` values, or `pattern` regular expressions. PHI should only appear in message content (prompts and responses), where it is protected under HIPAA safeguards.

Instead of loading all tool definitions into the context window up front, Claude searches your tool catalog (including tool names, descriptions, argument names, and argument descriptions) and loads only the tools it needs.

1142The web fetch tool allows Claude to retrieve full content from specified webpages and PDF documents.
1243
1344The latest web fetch tool version (`web_fetch_20260318`) supports **dynamic filtering**: Claude can write and execute code to filter fetched content before it reaches the context window, keeping only relevant information and discarding the rest. This reduces token consumption while maintaining response quality. Dynamic filtering is available with Claude 4.6 and later models and [Claude Mythos Preview](https://anthropic.com/glasswing). `web_fetch_20260318` also adds [response inclusion](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-fetch-tool#response-inclusion) control for agentic workflows. The previous versions (`web_fetch_20260309` for dynamic filtering and [cache bypass](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-fetch-tool#cache-bypass), `web_fetch_20260209` for dynamic filtering only, `web_fetch_20250910` for basic fetch) remain available.
