Unclear What the "compact-held" mode does differently from "compact" is not settled.
What
In auto mode, Claude Code picks a mode for how it asks questions in a thread. It used to choose between "compact" and "original". It now chooses between:
- "compact-held", when the environment variable
CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_THREAD_ASK_HELDis set or the server flagtengu_projects_thread_ask_held_killswitchis on - "compact", in every other case
An environment variable is a named value you set in your shell before starting Claude Code.
Why
This adds a held form of compact mode for questions asked in auto mode, and gives both you and the server a way to switch it on.
