What
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL points Claude Code at a different server, such as a proxy. ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN holds a value Claude Code sends to that server in the Authorization header to prove who you are. Claude Code sends that token when these conditions hold:
a provider check, which is unchanged
the server matches ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL
the token is valid
One extra check that could stop the token from being sent has been removed, and the token is no longer checked a second time.
Why
Some setups that did not send the token before may now send it to the custom server.
