What

A cloud session is a Claude Code session that runs on Anthropic's servers rather than on your own machine. When one is launched on a machine that is not signed in to claude.ai, Claude Code now guides you to sign in instead of stopping with an error.

  • Sign-in prompt: in interactive sessions that read from the keyboard, a message tells you to run /login. Once your login details are saved, Claude Code restarts itself and starts the cloud session. This is skipped when DISABLE_LOGIN_COMMAND is set or when slash commands (commands typed with a leading /) are turned off.
  • Input guard: while no cloud session is running, anything else you type is not sent. Claude Code shows "Nothing was sent or run: no cloud session is running here. Run /login to sign in, then press ↑ to bring back what you typed."
  • Allowed input: empty input, bash-mode input and known slash commands pass the first check, and a second allowlist lets only /login, /exit and /help through.

Why

Before, there was no such path. Now you are told exactly what to do, the session starts on its own after you sign in, and what you typed is not silently lost: pressing the up arrow brings it back.
